Recently, Mr. Chang Xiaobing, Chairman of China Unicom, Mr. Zhang Junan, Deputy General Manager, and related senior management from the Planning Department, Technology Department and China Unicom Research Institute visited the Beijing Cloud Base. Accompanied by Mr. Tian Suning (Edward Tian), Chairman of China Broadband Capital and founder of Cloud Base, the group led by Mr. Chang visited the modular data center – cloud frame, Super Cloud series cloud servers and Tianrun Intermediation Call Center Platform. Mr. Tian also introduced the background of creating the Cloud Base, its business progress, OS sharing services and other related information.
During the visit and exchanges, Mr. Chang was impressed by the achievements made by Beijing Cloud Base within such a short period and the Tianrun Intermediation Cloud Call Center that is cooperating with China Unicom to promote the "super-hotline of cloud computing". Mr. Chang indicated that, innovation had always been disruptive, and telecom operators would have promising prospects in the cloud era, however, the key was to change the way of thinking, and make great efforts to promote the transformation of ideas and innovation. "For us, the next six months or a year is a strategic opportunity of choice. We are going to build the infrastructure of cloud architecture and realize innovation in cloud services. Therefore, we, as an infrastructure service provider, also need to make a difference in the field of applications," said Mr. Chang.
Both sides agreed that China Unicom and Beijing Cloud Base had solid cooperation foundation and their businesses were highly complementary. Therefore, the two sides should deepen their cooperation in the field cloud services. In an effort to facilitate the construction of China Unicom’s cloud services, Mr. Tian proposed the establishment of a joint working group to gradually achieve comprehensive cooperation, starting from the application projects. Mr. Chang proposed to carry out work by following the steps of “advisory, planning, implementation”, solve the existing problems concerning the optimization of production systems and processes based on unified thinking, explore the internal potentials to improve efficiency and enhance market competitiveness, as well as strengthen communications and concerns for the innovative products and ideas of cloud computing.
As for the specific implementation steps, Mr. Chang pointed out that Beijing Cloud Base and China Unicom would form a strategic partnership. And he wished that Beijing Cloud Base would provide China Unicom with national training programs via video conferences, so that the Unicom staff could understand the concept of “cloud”. By taking into account their actual, specific roles and functions and through close cooperation, both sides would jointly to promote China Unicom’s efforts to establish its new image of the cloud era as soon as possible.
In reviewing the cooperation between Beijing Cloud Base and China Unicom, Mr. Tian indicated that, cloud computing was a revolutionary new thing, which should be embraced with innovative thinking, and the old routines would “strangle the new technology in the cradle”. Both sides should work together to promote cloud computing within China Unicom. The telecom operators should avoid becoming “pipeline operators”. And to really control their own destiny, they have to make breakthroughs in the era of cloud, which means to carry out O&M and provide applications and services through building cloud computing platforms, so as to truly become a “super computer”.
