China Unicom will reduce international roaming charges on September 1, which is the third time this year. The reduction covers the voice and data roaming charges in 30 countries and regions, including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Australia, Canada, Belarus, Albania, Turkey, Mongolia, Estonia, and Algeria
Operators in 15 countries and regions are new on the list, including Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, and Spain. Users will enjoy different discounts in roaming charges in different operator networks covered in the list. For instance, uses roaming in Australia will spend 2.86 yuan/minute to call back to the mainland China in Vodafone’s network; it will cost 6.86 yuan/minute to make the same phone call in Telstra’s network. Users could have more benefits overseas if they choose the preferential operators.
The reduction has covered the main target destinations for Chinese travellers. Unlike the adjustment of the roaming charges in US and Korea, the reduction has changed the cost of data roaming from 0.01yuan/KB to 0.005 yuan/KB in Britain, France, Germany, Denmark, and Singapore.
Earlier this year, China Unicom has become the first Chinese operator to open voice roaming and SMS business in Myanmar, providing great convenience to users traveling in Myanmar.
By September 2011, China Unicom has opened GSM/WCDMA voice roaming businesses with 536 operators in 254 countries and regions, of which 383 operators in 170 countries and regions have opened GPRS/WCDMA businesses.
